Note the interchange of consonants in the root!

писа́ть (imperf) / написа́ть (perf)

Он написа́л статью́ о Пу́шкине и сейча́с пи́шет письмо́ дру́гу. = He has written an article about Pushkin and how he is writing a letter (an email) to his friend.

The noun письмо is used for both letter and email. For email, we can use the word combination электро́нное письмо́ (which is too long, so we cut it to just письмо) or имейл (which no one knows how to spell correctly). 

Напиши́ мне письмо́! = Write an email to me! =)
