Do you know that today is the official day of the letter Ё? I didn't, but now I do! :) The letter Ё in the Russian alphabet represents 1 - the combination of sounds [jo] when the letter is placed in the beginning of the word ( ёлка, ёж ), after a vowel ( моё, твоё ) and after the soft/hard sign in the middle of the word ( разобьём ) 2 - [o] after a soft consonant - Пойдём! The letter Ё in the word is always stressed! As you have probably noticed, we don't always use Ё. It's important to use it in children's books, books and texts for foreign students - before they remember in which words it should be used. In original Russian texts philologists recommend to use it when it's necessary to prevent misreading or misunderstanding (for example, to mark the difference between ВСЕ everybody and ВСЁ everything ). Сегодня 50 лет со дня первого полёта человека в космос! 12 Апреля 1961 года с космодрома Байконур в космос был запущен корабль Восток-1. На борту корабля был Юрий Алексеевич Гагарин - первый космонавт Земли. Вот что он написал после полёта: ("Облетев Землю в корабле-спутнике, я увидел, как прекрасна наша планета. Сегодня в России отмечают Международный женский день. Сначала, в Советском Союзе, это был торжественный официальный праздник, посвящённый женщинам, которые борются за свои права. Но постепенно 8 марта стал праздником Женщины: матери, сестры, жены, дочери, вообще любимой Женщины. В этот день женщинам дарят цветы и подарки, говорят комплименты дома и на работе. 8 Марта и сейчас остаётся государственным праздником. Официальные лица официально поздравляют женщин с экранов телевизоров. On February, 23d, Russians celebrate the Defender of the Fatherland Day. It's a state holiday. On this day we honor those who are or were serving the Russian Armed Forces. It's been celebrated since 1919 as the day of the Red Army. On this day the President congratulates all the military and thanks them for serving our country, there are parades and demonstrations to honor veterans. You can see movies about war on TV, and in the evening - concerts. But the Defender of the Fatherland Day is not just an official holiday, it's also the day of all men! Women give flowers and presents to their fathers, brothers and co-workers, even when they have no relation to armed forces. And men relax, leisurely enjoy the day and save their energy - because very soon, at the beginning of March, the day of all women is coming! Happy Defender of the Fatherland Day, dear men!

23 Февраля в России празднуют День защитника Отечества. Это государственный праздник и нерабочий день. Его начали отмечать в 1919 году как день создания Красной Армии. Это официальный праздник, посвященный вооруженным силам России. В этот день Президент Российской Федерации обязательно поздравляет военных и благодарит их за службу нашей стране. По телевизору обязательно показывают фильмы о войне, а вечером - праздничные концерты. Но День защитника Отчества 23 февраля - это не только официальный праздник, но и день всех мужчин! Женщины дарят цветы и подарки своим отцам, мужьям, братьям и коллегам, даже если они не имеют отношения к армии. Мужчины отдыхают от работы и домашних дел и экономят силы, потому что совсем скоро, в начале марта, - день всех женщин! С ПРАЗДНИКОМ ВАС, ДОРОГИЕ МУЖЧИНЫ!

Well, ok, it's the 7th of November. And it looks like the Russian government found how to go on celebrating this date! It is not the Day of the Great October Socialist Revolution any more, but now it's the Day of Military Glory! In 1941, the first year of the Great Patriotic War, on November, 7th on the Red Square there was held a parade. It was a historical event. Stalin gave a speech in front of the troops, they marched through the Red Square and departed from there straight to the battlefront. In commemoration of this historical parade, a parade on the Red Square was held today, too. People send greetings and flowers to veterans of that war. In this picture you can see the troops marching under the statue of Minin and Pozharsky on the Red Square. Here   you can see how it went. Even if you don't understand Russian that well, you can still have a look at the parade!

11.04. Russia is celebrating the Day of People's Unity. It's a state holiday, and has been for several years by now. But it turns out that 2/3 of the population of Russian Federation have no idea what exactly we are celebrating on this day! Although, this holiday has an interesting history, it's one of my favourites )) So, the holiday. 1612. The Time of Troubles, and a war between Poland+Lithuania and Russia. Polish-Lithuanian invadors were already in Moscow. Minin and Pozharsky gathered a people's volunteer army and entered Moscow at the end of October (old style). On the 1st of November prince Pozharskiy entered Kitay-Gorod with the icon of Our Lady of Kazan. It was believed to be a miracle-working icon.  He swore that if he wins he would build a temple for the icon. And he won the battle for Moscow, and the war. That was the end of the war, and of the Times of Troubles, and at that time the Romanovs came to the throne. In 1649 this day was announced a state hol...
